The DOT vs non-DOT drug test question comes down to which rules a test runs under. A DOT drug test is one run under the federal rules of the U.S. Department of Transportation, for people in the positions those rules cover. A non-DOT drug test is any drug test run outside them. Testr performs non-DOT urine testing only: it is not a DOT collection site, and it does not perform DOT tests. This post explains the difference in plain terms for Los Angeles readers.
What "DOT" means on a drug test
DOT stands for the U.S. Department of Transportation. Its testing rules apply to positions such as commercial drivers, pilots, and transit and pipeline workers, along with other positions covered by federal rules. A test under those rules follows a federal procedure of its own, with its own forms, its own collector qualifications and its own reporting chain.
A person in a DOT-regulated position needs a DOT collection site. If you are an employer and are unsure whether a role is DOT-regulated, that is a question for employment counsel.
What a non-DOT urine drug screen is
A non-DOT test is any drug test not run under those federal rules. In Los Angeles that covers a wide range of reasons to test: a person who wants an answer for themselves, a parent booking for a teenager, a therapist or family-law professional ordering for a client, and employers whose roles are not DOT-regulated.
Non-DOT describes which rules apply. It does not describe how carefully a specimen is handled. At Testr, the procedure is the same at every visit, whoever booked it. For employers, Testr collects a non-DOT urine drug screen at the workplace, for pre-employment, reasonable-suspicion, random and post-incident collections. Testr collects and reports. Whether a test is called for, and what follows a result, is governed by the employer's own policy and advisors.
Panels: what is read at a non-DOT visit
People comparing the two often ask about panels. This post does not describe a DOT panel, because Testr does not perform DOT tests. A non-DOT test has no single fixed list: the panels depend on the test that is ordered, so they are worth checking.
Every Testr visit reads the same 14-panel rapid urine screen on site, by a certified collector: AMP (amphetamines), BAR (barbiturates), BUP (buprenorphine), BZO (benzodiazepines), COC (cocaine), EtG (the alcohol metabolite), FEN (fentanyl), MDMA, MET (methamphetamine), MOR (morphine and opiates), MTD (methadone), OXY (oxycodone), PCP and THC. Three validity strips check pH, oxidants and creatinine. Each panel reads negative or presumptive positive against its screening cutoff.
Alcohol is covered only as the EtG urine panel. Testr does not perform breath testing, and it collects urine only: no hair, saliva or blood.
Panel counts in general, from the 5-panel up, are compared in 5-panel vs 10-panel vs 14-panel drug tests. The short codes printed on a cup or a report are decoded on the drug test abbreviations page, and each panel has its own page under what the 14-panel test screens for.
Chain of custody on a non-DOT collection
Chain of custody is the record that follows a specimen from collection to report. A DOT collection uses the federal procedure's own forms. A Testr collection documents each step at the visit:
The collector arrives in plain clothes and an unmarked vehicle, and verifies identity with the 4-digit PIN shown in the booker's app.
The urine specimen is temperature-checked at collection.
The specimen is sealed in a tamper-evident container, photographed, and signed for by the collector and the person tested.
Every order carries a chain-of-custody code.
Laboratory confirmation on a non-DOT order
The read at the door is a screen. It reports each panel as negative or presumptive positive, not as a measured level. For a result that will be acted on, Testr offers a second test, the Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation. The sealed specimen goes under chain of custody to a CAP-accredited laboratory for LC-MS/MS confirmation. The laboratory's menu covers 81 substances across 31 drug classes and reports a measured level for each, with results in about 72 hours.
A valid prescription is noted at the visit. Every laboratory report is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO), a physician who reviews laboratory-confirmed results and accounts for valid prescriptions before the report is released.
If the visit was booked as the At-Home Rapid Test, it can be upgraded to laboratory confirmation in the app within 2 hours of collection, while the specimen is still viable.
Booking a non-DOT test in Los Angeles
Booking is in the Testr iOS app or at testrla.com/book. Visits run in 30-minute arrival windows from 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week. The earliest window is 3 hours after booking, so a collector can be at the door in as little as 3 hours, anywhere in the Los Angeles area.
One person is tested per booking. To book for an employee or a client, choose "Someone else": the person's name goes on the record, and their consent is recorded at booking. For a group, book one visit per person. Each gets its own window, chain-of-custody code and record. Results are released privately to the account holder in the app or at testrla.com/account, or to a named third party with the account holder's written consent.
Therapists, psychologists and family-law professionals ordering for clients can read more on Testr for professionals, and what to set up before booking a client drug test walks through the first steps. When you are ready, book a non-DOT drug test.
Questions people ask
What is a non-DOT drug test?
A drug test that is not run under the U.S. Department of Transportation's federal rules. Every Testr test is non-DOT: a 14-panel urine screen read on site, with laboratory confirmation available as a second test.
Can I use a non-DOT test for a DOT job?
No. A person in a DOT-regulated position needs a DOT collection site, and a Testr record is not a substitute for a DOT test. If you are unsure whether a role is DOT-regulated, ask the employer.
Does non-DOT mean less rigorous?
Non-DOT means the test is not run under those federal rules. It does not describe how the specimen is handled. At a Testr collection, the collector verifies identity with a door PIN, checks specimen temperature, seals and photographs the specimen and collects both signatures, and every order carries a chain-of-custody code.
Does a DOT physical include a drug test?
Testr does not perform DOT physicals or DOT drug tests, so this post does not cover what a DOT physical includes. The employer that requires the physical can say.
Does a non-DOT drug test check for alcohol?
It depends on the panels ordered. A Testr test does, as EtG, the alcohol metabolite, one of the 14 panels read from the same urine specimen. It is not a breath test, and Testr does not perform breath testing.
Can an employer test several employees in one visit?
No. Every visit is one collector and one person. For a group, book one visit per person, each with its own 30-minute window, chain-of-custody code and record.
