Booking a Client Drug Test in Los Angeles: What Therapists and Counselors Set Up First

Booking a drug test for a client is a short form, but a few things are easier to settle before you open it than while a collector is on the way. This is what a therapist or counselor in Los Angeles sets up before a first Testr booking for a client: the account the result lands in, the conversation with the client, rapid read or laboratory confirmation, and what the client needs at the door.

How a booking for a client works

Testr is mobile urine drug testing in the Los Angeles area. You book at testrla.com/book or in the Testr iOS app. When the form asks who is being tested, choose "someone else" and enter the client's details. Their name goes on the record, the client's consent is recorded at booking, and the result is released to the account that booked. The client authorizes who else, if anyone, sees it.

A certified collector comes to the client's address in a 30-minute window, 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week, and can arrive in as little as 3 hours after you book. At the door the collector confirms their identity with the 4-digit PIN shown in the booking, collects a urine specimen, reads the 14-panel screen on the spot, and seals the specimen under a chain-of-custody code with both signatures on the record. The full sequence is on the same-day drug test page, and the practice-facing overview is on the professionals page.

Set up the account the result will land in

Results are released only to the account that booked the visit, in the app or at testrla.com/account, with a PDF record available whenever you choose. So the first decision is which account that should be.

Create it with a work email you actually check. The same login works on the site and in the app, and the app is where you track the collector live and where the laboratory upgrade lives, so have both set up before the first visit. In a group practice, one account per ordering professional keeps each client's record with the person who ordered it, because a record stays with the account that placed it.

Talk with the client before you book

The booking records the client's consent, so the client should already know what they are agreeing to: that it is a urine test, that the screen covers 14 drug classes, that the result comes to your account, and whether laboratory confirmation is on the order.

How your practice documents that conversation, and what your own consent forms need to say, is a question for your licensing board or your counsel. Testr does not give that advice, and this post does not either.

If the client is under 18, a parent or legal guardian needs to be present for the entire visit and signs the consent in the minor's place. The collector cannot proceed without them. More on that on the parents page.

Choose rapid or laboratory confirmation before the visit

There are two tests, and the choice is made on the booking form.

The At-Home Rapid Test is the 14-panel urine screen read at the door. Each panel is recorded as negative or presumptive positive, and three validity strips (pH, oxidants and creatinine) are read alongside them. What those words mean is explained in how to read a Testr result.

The Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation starts with the same screen. The collector then seals the specimen under chain of custody and it goes to a CAP-accredited laboratory for LC-MS/MS confirmation. The laboratory identifies the specific compound and reports a measured level, which a reviewing professional can compare against a prescription for buprenorphine, methadone, a benzodiazepine, a stimulant, an antidepressant or an antipsychotic. Results come back in about 72 hours, and the confirmation menu covers 81 substances.

If you booked the rapid test and want the laboratory behind it after seeing the read, you can upgrade in the app within 2 hours of collection. After that the specimen is no longer viable for confirmation and a new collection would be needed. In practice that means deciding before the visit, or being reachable in the two hours after it.

Know what the 14 panels cover

The rapid screen covers AMP (amphetamines), BAR (barbiturates), BUP (buprenorphine), BZO (benzodiazepines), COC (cocaine), EtG (alcohol metabolite), FEN (fentanyl), MDMA, MET (methamphetamine), MOR (opiates, read against morphine), MTD (methadone), OXY (oxycodone), PCP and THC. Cutoffs and detection windows for each are on the 14-panel page, and the short codes on the cassette are decoded on the abbreviations page.

Some things a client may be prescribed or asking about are not on the rapid panel at all: hydrocodone, kratom, psilocybin, antipsychotics and most antidepressants. Most of those are on the laboratory's 81-substance menu, which covers psychiatric medications as well: seven antidepressant compounds and metabolites, eight antipsychotic compounds and metabolites, gabapentin, pregabalin, zolpidem and methylphenidate, alongside hydrocodone, the kratom alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, and psilocin, each reported with a measured level. If the substance you care about is not one of the 14, the Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation is the order that can answer the question. The kratom page and the buprenorphine page cover two common cases.

Two things the client needs at the door

Photo ID. The collector checks identity before collecting, and the name on the ID is the name that goes on the record.

The 4-digit PIN. The booking generates a PIN that the collector confirms at the door. The client should know the check is coming and where the PIN is. Everything else, including the specimen kit and the paperwork, arrives with the collector.

Questions people ask

Can a therapist book a Testr visit for a client?

Yes. Choose "someone else" on the booking form, enter the client's details, and the result comes to your account. The client's consent is recorded at booking.

Who sees the result?

The account that booked the visit. It appears in the app or at testrla.com/account, with a PDF available on request, and the client authorizes anyone else who is to see it.

Do I have to choose laboratory confirmation before the visit?

It is simplest to choose it on the booking form. If you booked the rapid test only, you can upgrade in the app within 2 hours of collection while the specimen is still viable.

How long does the laboratory take?

About 72 hours from collection, from a CAP-accredited laboratory using LC-MS/MS.

Does the client need anything ready?

Photo ID and awareness of the 4-digit PIN check at the door. The collector brings everything else.
