You are looking at a drug test cup or a results report, and one line says ETG. ETG on a drug test is the alcohol panel. It stands for ethyl glucuronide, usually written EtG, a breakdown product of alcohol that shows drinking well after the alcohol itself is gone. It is not a breath reading, and it is not a blood alcohol level. This post covers what the ETG line means, how its cutoff works, and what a laboratory adds when a reading needs a closer look.
What ETG stands for on a drug test
Ethyl glucuronide is a metabolite: something the body produces as it processes alcohol. A urine EtG panel looks for that metabolite, not for alcohol itself, and that difference sets the time frame. A breath test can only pick up alcohol that is still in the body. EtG is still there after the alcohol has cleared, so a urine EtG result looks further back.
On a Testr report the panel prints as ETG, one of 14 codes on the same cassette. The laboratory's menu writes it as EtG. If other codes on your cup are unfamiliar, what the codes on a drug test mean goes through each one, from AMP to MOP to FYL.
Testr collects urine only. It does not do breath, blood, saliva or hair testing, so for alcohol the EtG urine panel is the only measure.
How long ETG shows up, and what the cutoff means
EtG is detectable in urine for up to about 80 hours (3-4 days) after heavy drinking, and for a shorter time after light drinking, at a 500 ng/mL screening cutoff. That is a typical range, not a guarantee for any one person.
The cutoff is the other half of the answer. On the rapid cassette, the ETG panel reads presumptive positive at or above 500 ng/mL and negative below it, so a trace under the cutoff still reads negative. A negative therefore says the level was under 500 ng/mL when the specimen was collected. It is not a statement that no alcohol was ever consumed. A presumptive positive says the panel reached the cutoff. It is a screen, and it points toward confirmation rather than settling the question.
The panel's own page covers how long alcohol shows on an EtG urine test. For the three result types, negative, presumptive positive and laboratory-confirmed, see how to read a Testr drug test result.
Why a low ETG reading needs context
The EtG panel has one known wrinkle. Heavy exposure to alcohol-based products like hand sanitizer or mouthwash can occasionally cause low-level positives. A rapid strip has no way to show that. It gives a line, not a number, so a result just past 500 ng/mL and a result far above it look identical on the cassette.
A measured level fills that gap, and a measured level is what laboratory confirmation reports.
What laboratory confirmation adds
Testr offers two tests. The At-Home Rapid Test is the 14-panel screen, read at your door. The Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation includes that same read, and then the sealed specimen travels under chain of custody to a CAP-accredited laboratory for LC-MS/MS analysis.
For alcohol, the laboratory tests the same specimen for two markers: ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS), each with a 500 ng/mL cutoff. Each comes back as a measured level rather than a line on a strip, and results arrive in about 72 hours. Alcohol is only part of the report. The laboratory's menu covers 81 substances across 31 drug classes and reports a measured level for each.
Every laboratory report is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO), a physician who reviews laboratory-confirmed results and accounts for valid prescriptions before the report is released.
If you booked the At-Home Rapid Test and the ETG line raises a question, laboratory confirmation can be added in the app within 2 hours of collection. The limit is set by how long the specimen stays viable. The post on adding laboratory confirmation within the 2-hour upgrade window covers the details.
ETG is on every Testr visit
There is no separate alcohol order. Every Testr visit in the Los Angeles area runs the same 14-panel rapid urine screen, read on site by a certified collector: amphetamines, barbiturates, buprenorphine, benzodiazepines, cocaine, EtG, fentanyl, MDMA, methamphetamine, morphine and opiates, methadone, oxycodone, PCP and THC. Three validity strips (pH, oxidants and creatinine) check the specimen itself. For a panel-by-panel rundown, see what each of the 14 drug test panels screens for.
Whatever prompted the booking, the visit runs the same way. The collector comes in plain clothes, in an unmarked vehicle, and checks identity with the 4-digit PIN shown in the booker's app. The urine specimen is temperature-checked, sealed in a tamper-evident container, photographed, and signed for by both the collector and the person tested. Each order has its own chain-of-custody code. What happens at a mobile drug test visit goes through each step in order.
Results go privately to the account holder, in the app or at testrla.com/account, where the PDF can be downloaded. A named third party receives them only with the account holder's written consent.
Who books an ETG test
Alcohol questions come up in the same places as any other drug question: an agreement within a family, a testing arrangement a therapist or family-law professional has set up, or a household that wants a documented answer. Testr's part is the collection and the report. What the result means is for you and whoever asked for the test to work out.
Each booking covers one person. With a "someone else" booking, a parent, a professional or an employer can book for another person, and that person's consent is recorded at booking. When the person tested is a minor, a parent or legal guardian must be present for the whole visit and signs the consent in the minor's place. There is more for parents arranging a drug test at home and for therapists and family-law professionals.
Book in the Testr iOS app or at testrla.com/book. Arrival windows are 30 minutes long, from 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week, and a collector can be at your door in as little as 3 hours. Questions people ask
What does ETG mean on a drug test?
It is the alcohol panel. ETG stands for ethyl glucuronide (EtG), a breakdown product of alcohol that shows drinking well after the alcohol itself is gone.
How long does ETG stay in your urine?
Up to about 80 hours (3-4 days) after heavy drinking, and a shorter time after light drinking, at a 500 ng/mL screening cutoff. That is a typical range, not a guarantee.
Can hand sanitizer or mouthwash cause a positive ETG test?
Heavy exposure to alcohol-based products like these can occasionally cause low-level positives. The rapid strip cannot show how low a reading is. Laboratory confirmation reports measured levels of EtG and EtS instead of a line.
Is an ETG test the same as a breath alcohol test?
No. A breath test picks up alcohol still in the body. A urine EtG test picks up the metabolite the body made while clearing it. Testr collects urine only and does not do breath testing.
Is ETG part of a standard drug test?
Not always. A typical 5-panel or 10-panel test does not include alcohol. Every Testr visit reads ETG as one of its 14 panels, so there is nothing extra to order.
How fast can I get an ETG test in Los Angeles?
A collector can be at your door in as little as 3 hours, in 30-minute arrival windows from 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week. Book in the Testr iOS app or at testrla.com/book.
