How to Drug Test a Teenager at Home in Los Angeles: A Parent's Guide to the Visit

Drug test a teenager at home in Los Angeles: a collector reads 14 panels at your door, a parent or legal guardian signs for a minor, and you get the result.

Chain-of-custody procedure on every drug test collection CAP-accredited laboratory confirmation by LC-MS/MS Results released only to the account holder, or to a third party they authorize in writing

Yes, you can drug test your teenager at home in Los Angeles, and you do not have to be the one holding the cup. With Testr, a certified collector comes to your home, collects a urine specimen, reads a 14-panel rapid screen on the spot and releases the result to your account. When your teenager is under 18, a parent or legal guardian is present for the whole visit and signs the consent.

Whether and when to test is your family's decision, and questions about your teenager's health belong with their pediatrician. This post covers how the visit works and what the test reads.

Can you drug test your kids at home?

Yes. The two ways this guide compares are a urine cup you buy at a drugstore and read yourself, and a certified collector who comes to your home and handles the collection. (A mail-in kit, which the person tested collects alone and posts, is another route.) The difference is who handles the specimen, what gets checked and what gets recorded, and at-home urine drug test kit vs certified collector sets the cup and the collector side by side.

Testr is the collector kind. It serves addresses within 20 miles of Century City, with 30-minute arrival windows you choose between 7 AM and 7 PM, seven days a week. The arrival window is a good-faith estimate, not a guarantee. The earliest window is 3 hours after you book, so a collector can be at your door in as little as 3 hours. Every Testr visit is a urine test, and Testr runs non-DOT tests only.

How to drug test a teenager at home: booking the visit

You book in the Testr iOS app or at testrla.com/book. On the site, booking takes six short steps:

  1. Pick the test. The At-Home Rapid Test is the 14-panel urine screen read at your door. The Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation is the same screen, after which the sealed specimen goes to a CAP-accredited laboratory.

  2. Say who is being tested. Choose "Someone else" and enter your teenager's full name. Their name goes on the record, and the results come to your account. If your teenager is under 18, choose "Under 18" when the booking asks whether the person tested is 18 or older, and enter the full name of the parent or legal guardian who will be present.

  3. Set up your account. Results are released to this account, or to a third party you authorize in writing, so use one you control. The same login works in the app and on the site.

  4. Enter your address. The booking screen checks the exact address against the live service area before you pay.

  5. Pick a window. Arrival windows are 30 minutes long, from 7 AM to 7 PM, and you choose yours before you pay.

  6. Pay. Payment confirms the booking, and the order goes to a collector to accept.

Once a collector accepts, the app shows their name, their credentials and their vehicle, and you can follow them live in the app once they set out. Every collector clears a background check before their first visit and holds current CPR certification.

Does a parent have to be there?

Yes, when your teenager is under 18. A parent or legal guardian stays for the entire visit and signs the consent in the minor's place. The collector cannot proceed without them. Your teenager has to be there in person too, since the specimen is collected at the visit.

What happens when the collector arrives

The collector comes in plain clothes and an unmarked vehicle, and a visit usually takes about 15 minutes. What the neighbors see is a professional with a bag.

At the door, the collector has to enter the 4-digit PIN shown in the account that booked before the collection can begin, which proves they reached the right person. The urine specimen is temperature-checked at collection.

The collector reads the 14-panel test after a set development time and records each panel exactly as it appears, without interpreting it. The specimen is sealed with tamper-evident tape and the seal is photographed before it leaves the room. One custody code ties the specimen, the report and any laboratory result together. What happens at a mobile drug test visit walks through each step in more detail.

What the 14 panels cover

Every visit reads the same 14 panels:

Creatinine, oxidant and pH checks on the specimen itself look for dilution and adulteration. Each panel's cutoff and detection window are in one table on the drug test abbreviations page, and every panel has its own page linked from the 14-panel drug test page. Does a 14-panel drug test detect fentanyl covers the FEN panel on its own.

LSD and ketamine are not on the 14 panels. Both are on the laboratory's 81-substance confirmation menu, which applies when laboratory confirmation is ordered.

Rapid read or laboratory confirmation

A rapid panel does not measure a level: a specimen reads presumptive positive on a panel at or above that panel's screening cutoff. The Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation sends the sealed specimen under chain of custody to a CAP-accredited laboratory, where LC-MS/MS identifies the specific compound and reports a measured level. Results come back in about 72 hours.

Every laboratory report goes to a Medical Review Officer (MRO), a physician who reviews laboratory-confirmed results and accounts for valid prescriptions before the report is released.

If you booked the At-Home Rapid Test, you can add laboratory confirmation in the app within 2 hours of collection. The 2-hour upgrade window explains that decision.

Can you test someone for drugs at home with a kit instead?

You can. A drugstore cup is a rapid screen built on the same antibody-based method as the collector's 14-panel test, so it does not measure a level either: a specimen reads presumptive positive at or above each strip's cutoff. The panel list and the cutoffs depend on the cup, so two cups with the same number of panels can screen for different drugs. Look for the codes printed on it: FYL or FEN for fentanyl, ETG for the alcohol metabolite. The drug test abbreviations page decodes the rest.

With a cup, your family handles the specimen and reads the lines, and nobody else records who gave the specimen, when, or what each panel showed. A collector visit adds a third party and a record made by someone other than you: the door PIN check, the temperature check, the photographed seal and the custody code. Another route is a clinic or a laboratory collection site, which means a drive and a waiting room. Where to get a drug test in Los Angeles compares a clinic, a laboratory collection site and a collector visit.

Who sees the result?

The result is released to the account that placed the order. When you book for a teenager under 18, that is your account. A teenager who is 18 or older signs an authorization at the visit naming you before their result can come to you. The rapid read is released before the collector leaves, in the Testr app or at testrla.com/account. In the app, your records can be locked behind Face ID.

Testr never releases results to schools, employers, insurers or family members unless you share them yourself, you authorize the release in writing, or the law requires it. What each result word means is explained in how to read a Testr drug test result.

Questions people ask

Can I book for a time my teenager is home from school?

Yes, when a window is open at that time. Windows run every 30 minutes from 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week, and you choose one before you pay.

What if my teenager takes a prescribed medication?

You or your teenager can tell the collector at the visit. A valid prescription for an amphetamine-based ADHD medicine such as Adderall or Vyvanse can cause a positive on the AMP panel. When laboratory confirmation is ordered, the laboratory report goes to a Medical Review Officer (MRO), a physician who reviews laboratory-confirmed results and accounts for valid prescriptions before the report is released.

Does CBD show up on the THC panel?

Not as CBD. The THC panel responds to THC-COOH, the main metabolite of THC in urine, not to cannabidiol, but some legal CBD products contain enough THC to cause a positive result. See does CBD show up on a drug test.

How long does THC stay detectable?

On the THC panel, it is detectable for about 3 days after occasional use, but up to 30 days or more with heavy daily use, at a 50 ng/mL screening cutoff. The other windows are on the drug test abbreviations page.

Can two siblings be tested at one visit?

No. One person is tested per booking, so each sibling needs their own booking.

Will the neighbors know why the collector is there?

The collector arrives in plain clothes and an unmarked vehicle, and a visit usually takes about 15 minutes.

More for families is on at-home drug testing for teens. When you are ready, book a visit in the Testr iOS app or at testrla.com/book, and a certified collector can be at your door in as little as 3 hours, 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week.
