What does a positive on the Methamphetamine drug test panel mean?
The on-site read is a drug screen. It reports positive or negative against the screening cutoff, not a measured level. Crystal meth, Desoxyn and the MET (mAMP) panel
Methamphetamine reaches a urine test from two very different places. Most of it is illicit, sold as crystal meth, crystal or ice, and smoked, snorted or swallowed. A small amount is prescribed, as Desoxyn, a tablet occasionally used for ADHD. Both are the same compound, and both read on the MET panel at the 500 ng/mL screening cutoff. Cups and laboratory reports print the panel as MET, mAMP or MAMP; a Testr report prints MET.
Why a MET positive often comes with an AMP positive
The body breaks part of a methamphetamine dose down into amphetamine, so a specimen that carries methamphetamine often carries amphetamine too, and the AMP panel can read alongside MET. It does not run the other way. Adderall, Dexedrine and the other amphetamine medicines do not turn into methamphetamine, so an amphetamine prescription on its own is not a source of methamphetamine. Laboratory confirmation settles which compound is which: its menu measures methamphetamine and amphetamine separately, at 100 ng/mL each, and reports a level for both.
Decongestants, prescriptions and a presumptive MET read
Some cold-medicine ingredients and certain prescriptions can trigger a methamphetamine screen. That is why a MET line on the cassette is recorded as a presumptive positive rather than a finding: the strip reacts to a family of related compounds and cannot name the one it reacted to. The laboratory's measured result, compound by compound, is what a reviewing physician works from.
What a MET line cannot tell you
A positive MET line is one reading against one cutoff. It cannot say whether the methamphetamine was smoked or swallowed, how much was used, or where inside the panel's window the use fell, and it cannot tell prescribed Desoxyn from crystal meth, because they are the same compound. A laboratory level does not settle those questions on its own either. It is the amount measured in the specimen on the date of collection, which is why the collection date and the chain-of-custody code travel with it.

Often, yes. Part of a methamphetamine dose is broken down into amphetamine, so a MET positive frequently comes with an AMP positive. The reverse is not true: amphetamine medicines such as Adderall do not produce methamphetamine.
Does Desoxyn show up on a drug test?
