Same-Day Drug Testing for Clinicians: Lab Results in About 72 Hours

For clinicians in Los Angeles: book a client's drug test, get the 14-panel read the same day, and add laboratory confirmation for results in about 72 hours.

Same-day drug testing for clinicians in Los Angeles with Testr

A client says something in session, or you see a pattern you want to check, and the useful moment for a drug test is today. The gap between that session and a clinic appointment is where tests get missed: the delay gives a client time to reschedule, cancel, or drift. Same-day booking closes that window, and a result can be in hand before the next appointment.

This post covers what same-day means with Testr, from booking to a collector at the door; what the on-site read gives you today versus what the laboratory adds in about 72 hours; who reviews the laboratory report before it is released; how results reach you; and how to set up an account so you can book for a client.

A few fixed facts up front: Testr serves the Los Angeles area within 20 miles of Century City, collects urine only, is non-DOT only, and is booked through the iOS app or at testrla.com/book.

What same-day means, from booking to arrival

Testr sends a certified collector to the client's location. Collections run 7 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week, in 30-minute arrival windows. You pick a window when you book, and a collector can arrive in as little as 3 hours. The last window ends at 7 PM and the earliest arrival is 3 hours after booking, so a same-day visit depends on booking early enough in the day.

This is not a mail-in kit. The collector comes to the client in person, collects the urine specimen on site, runs the screen, and reads it there. The client does not drive anywhere, sit in a lobby, or hunt for parking near a clinic.

That matters more in Los Angeles than it might elsewhere. A client whose nearest clinic is across two freeways at 4 PM is a client who is likely to miss the appointment, and a missed appointment is a gap in the record. Bringing the collector to the client removes the travel problem. For a walkthrough of the visit itself, see what happens at a mobile drug test visit.

What you have the same day: the on-site read

Every Testr visit includes a 14-panel urine drug screen, read on site by the certified collector. The panels cover the common drug classes, including benzodiazepines, opiates, amphetamine, and fentanyl; the full list of panel abbreviations is on the drug test abbreviations page.

The collector also runs validity checks on the specimen: pH, oxidants, and creatinine. Those flag a diluted or adulterated sample at the visit rather than days later.

The on-site read is presumptive. A negative panel means the drug class was not detected above that panel's cutoff. A positive panel is a presumptive positive, not a confirmed finding; laboratory confirmation is what identifies the specific substance. How each outcome reads on the report is covered in how to read a Testr result.

For many clinical questions, the same-day read is enough: you know today whether the panels came back negative, and whether something needs a closer look.

What the laboratory adds in about 72 hours

The optional Rapid Test with Laboratory Confirmation sends the same specimen to a CAP-accredited laboratory for LC-MS/MS analysis. Where the on-site screen reports a drug class as detected or not detected, LC-MS/MS identifies specific substances and reports measured levels. The laboratory menu covers 81 substances, and results come back in about 72 hours.

Two details matter for clinicians and counselors.

The laboratory menu covers common psychiatric prescriptions. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, stimulants, gabapentin, pregabalin, zolpidem, and methylphenidate are all on the 81-substance menu. There is no separate psychiatric panel to order; laboratory confirmation covers them. One collection can therefore answer two questions at once: whether the prescribed medication is present, and whether anything else on the 81-substance menu is present.

The upgrade decision has a 2-hour window. Laboratory confirmation can be added in the app within 2 hours of collection, while the specimen is still viable. If you are unsure at booking, you can see the on-site read first and then decide.

Medical Review Officer review

Every laboratory report is reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO), a physician who reviews laboratory-confirmed results and accounts for valid prescriptions before the report is released. For a client on prescribed benzodiazepines or a stimulant, this is the step that puts a detected prescription in context before the report reaches anyone.

MRO review applies to laboratory confirmation only. The on-site screen is read by the collector at the visit.

How results reach you

Results are released privately to the account holder. Who that is depends on how the test was booked.

If you book for the client from your own account, you are the account holder. The on-site read and any laboratory report are released to your account. The client's consent is recorded at booking.

If the client books for themselves, the client is the account holder. With the client's written consent, the laboratory report can go directly to a named third party. That third party can be you, or an attorney, an employer, or a program.

If you want the on-site read as well as the laboratory report in your own account, book for the client yourself.

Setting up to book for a client

Testr is booked in the iOS app or at testrla.com/book. Booking runs through the app or the site rather than over the phone, so a same-day visit is something you set up yourself in a couple of minutes.

Create a Testr account in the iOS app or on the booking page; it is the same account and booking flow anyone uses. Choose "Someone else" when you book and enter the client's name. The client's consent is recorded at booking, and results are released to your account. The professionals page explains the flow for practices. From there the sequence is:

  1. Book a 30-minute arrival window between 7 AM and 7 PM, any day of the week. A collector can arrive in as little as 3 hours.

  2. Choose at booking whether to include laboratory confirmation, or add it in the app within 2 hours of collection.

  3. Read the on-site 14-panel result the same day.

  4. If laboratory confirmation was added, receive the MRO-reviewed laboratory report in about 72 hours.

It helps to set expectations with the client before the visit: a certified collector will come to them, the screen is read on the spot, and a laboratory report, if ordered, follows in about 72 hours.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. Testr collects urine only, and it is non-DOT only. If you need a DOT-regulated test or a different specimen type, Testr is not the right fit.

Questions clinicians ask

Can I book a test for a client without the client booking it themselves?

Yes. Book from your own Testr account in the iOS app or at testrla.com/book, choose "Someone else" when you book, and enter the client's name. The client's consent is recorded at booking, and results are released to your account. The professionals page explains the flow for practices.

What do I actually have on the same day?

The 14-panel urine screen, read on site by the certified collector, plus the specimen validity checks for pH, oxidants, and creatinine. If you add laboratory confirmation, the laboratory report follows in about 72 hours.

Does Testr offer a psychiatric medication panel?

There is no separate panel. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, stimulants, gabapentin, pregabalin, zolpidem, and methylphenidate are on the 81-substance laboratory confirmation menu, so adding laboratory confirmation covers them.

Who reviews the laboratory report before I see it?

The Medical Review Officer (MRO). Every laboratory report goes through MRO review before it is released. The on-site screen is read by the collector at the visit. MRO review applies to laboratory confirmation only.

Can I call to book?

Booking runs through the app or the site rather than over the phone. Book in the iOS app or at testrla.com/book, and use the number on the site if you have a question before you do.
